"a" versus "the"

She bent down on one knee and gave me a key to her apartment. Some time later, I gave her a key she put on a chain and wore around her neck. I wrote that it was “a” key to my heart. She noted that I didn’t use the word “the”. She knew the difference. She knew what I meant by it. She wasn’t the only one who held a key to my heart.
